Edward enlisted in the Ohio Light Artillery on October 30, 1861. He was discharged January 25, 1865. His unit fought at Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. According to his pension papers he was 48 years old, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, Complexion Dark, Eyes Blue, Hair Dark. His occupation was listed as a farmer. He enlisted for a term of 3 years. He was captured November 27, 1863 at the Battle of Mine Run in the wilderness near New Hope Church in Rapidan, Virginia. He was confined at Richmond, VA on November 28, 1863, and then sent to Andersonville Prison on December 4, 1863. He arrived at Andersonville on December 11, 1863. He was paroled at Charleston, SC on December 13, 1864, and reported at Camp Parole, MD on December 19, 1864. He received a furlough on December 25, 1864 to end January 25, 1865. He was initially charged with Desertion but the charge was removed. He reported at Camp Chase, Franklin Co., OH January 23, 1865 and was sent to Tad Barracks that day. He was discharged on January 25, 1865 at the expiration of his term. He was mustered out under order No. 80. 

Edward wrote many letters to his wife, Sarah Freeland while he was in the war. They usually started "Well my old Gal" or "My dear old Gal" and ended with "I want you to kiss my little Pets" or "Kiss my Pets for me."  His reference to Pets was for her to kiss the children.  A couple of excerpts: 

April, the 1, 1863, Camp near Falmouth, Virginia: 

Well my old Gal..... 

...There is a great stir in the camp today.  Old Uncle Abe Lincoln is with us today and there is quite a stir in the camp.  The men and boys is all in the field with their best bib and tucker on. 

...I will send you some money in A short time.  We will be paid in this month.  I want you to tell me what you think about me coming home.  It will cost me about thirty or forty dollars.  Dont you think the money will do you more good than my company for 3 or 4 days?  There is men in this Company that would take the last dollar to come home and let their family suffer or rest at the mercy of the people.  I do not want to do that thing.  If I know you and the children has plenty to eat and wear, I can sleep sound. 

...I want you to kiss my little Pets.  No more at present but remain your husband until death.

...We had a battle at Chancelersville 10 miles above Fredericksburg on the River.  There was many A poor fellow rubed out there.... 

I will come to see you some of these times when you are not looking for me.  If I only knowed you had enough to eat and wear for your self and the children I could be satisfied, but if you have not got enough to eat and wear I would be the most miserable creture in the world. 

Old Stonewall Jackson got killed in the Battle.  He was the bravest in the Southern Army.  Poor old fellow he was as brave as A Lion.  He has done more mischief than any one man in the south, but he has gone where we must all go some time. 

...Write soon and often.  Kiss my Pets for me.  I will write soon.  Give my love to Mary Patton.

He is survived by one daughter, Andrea Rafferty of Jackson; one son, Chris of Circleville, OH; one brother, John Jr. of Missouri and his fiancee', Cynthia Rarden of Jackson; and also four grandchildren. He was associated with Fair Park Baptist Church and was a member of American Legion Post 584, Marion; Masonic Lodge 176 of the Free and Accepted Masons, Upper Sandusky; and Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus.  Also surviving are two sons, Mark A. (Robin) Fuller of Prospect and Matthew T. (Amy) Fuller of LaRue; a daughter, Lee Anne (David) Jenner of Libertyville, IL; grandchildren, Jayme, Cory, Hanna and Rebecca Fuller, and Emily and Eric Jenner; and a sister, Mary Ousley of Wellston. A brother, Paul, preceded him in death.  Burial will be held at a later date in Fairmount Cemetery in Jackson. Memorial contributions may be made to Fair Park Baptist Church.
