McCoy Hatfield Pics
Home Up

Below are some pictures of the Hatfield & McCoy families that were generously shared by various descendants of the families.  While I am a McCoy descendant, I want to share the pictures of both families!
Be sure to click on the pictures for a larger version.

Jean Hounshell Peppers has also been very generous in providing copies of some of the original newspapers articles from the feud. They can be found on the McCoy & Hatfield Articles page.

The picture on the left is of Asa Harmon McCoy, Sr. Asa was considered to be one the first of the feud casualties. Asa was the brother of Old Randall McCoy.

Asa was said to have been murdered on January 7, 1865 in a cave by his home by Jim Vance because he was a Union sympathizer.

This picture was shared by Buddy Dickens via Edward McCoy. Buddy is a descendant of the Vance family & Edward is the 3rd great grandson of Old Randall McCoy.

This is a picture that was said on E-bay to be a picture of the 3 McCoy sons (Pharmer, Tolbert & Randal, Jr.) after they were killed by the Hatfields on
August 9, 1882.  IT HAS NOT BEEN AUTHENTICATED!

The bodies of the 3 were brought by sled to their father's home.  John H. "Brush" Scott, a descendant of my McCoy line was part of the group of men who brought them home.  John is pictured below.

This picture was shared by Buddy Dickens via Edward McCoy.

John H. "Brush" Scott & wife Harriet Farley.  John was part of the detail that brought the McCoy brother's bodies back to their father's home.  John was a cousin of Old Randall McCoy, father to the three boys.

John H. & his brother, Henderson, were ambushed and shot by the Hatfield's.  Per Truda McCoy in her book The McCoys: Their Story.  John was shot in the leg & Henderson in the shoulder.  It was thought they were accidentally shot because the Hatfield's mistakenly thought Henderson was Old Randall.

Picture shared courtesy of Terry Thacker.  Terry's grandfather indicated John walked with a limp the rest of his life after he was shot.

The two pictures on the left are of Detroit "Troy" Hatfield & his brother, Elias Hatfield.  These are sons of Devil Anse.  According to the West Virginia State Archives, both Troy and Elias were shot to death over a liquor dispute on October 17, 1911.
